Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport


When Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport began using solutions from UFIS'product portfolio in June 2008, it became the third airport, and the first brownfield airport, in India to use UFIS Universal Flight Information solution.

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru International Airport, Bangalore, Bangalore -- both greenfield airports -- began using our airport IT solutions in March and May 2008, respectively.
Delhi also premiered WebFIDS -- at the time, UFISs latest addition to its Flight Information Display System product line. WebFIDS provides the same reliability and industry-proven functionality as the classic FIDS solutions with the added flexibility of being able to use any PC-based controller running Windows or Linux as the display controller. WebFIDS oeprated on 400+ monitors throughout Terminals 1 and 2.
Because it was a fully operational airport, Delhi used a phased approach in installing the our software. Planning and processing for domestic flights occurred first, followed a month later by international flights. When the newly built Terminal 3 began operations in July 2010, the flight and resource planning and management for that terminal was added seamlessly to UFIS.
In partnership with Siemens Information Systems Limited, India (SISL), UFIS provided system integration and interfaces to 14 external systems such as the ATC and SITA Telex through the information broker. UFIS-AS also delivered its Airport Operational Database (AODB), Flight Information Processing System, Flight Information Display System (FIDS which includes WebFIDS) and Apron Management System. Since the initial installation, Delhi has added the Data Changes module to its UFIS® package.
Our Airport Operational Database (AODB) is the heart of the IT environment. The AODB provides a state-of-the-art, fully scalable solution, combining the highest level of security with real-time performance. The most important function of the AODB is to provide a data integration platform for all IT systems at the airport as well as off-airport systems. Information from UFIS and other systems is stored in the AODB and is made available to authorized applications and systems.
The UFIS Flight Information Process System (FIPS) supports airport operations by enabling the user to manage their flight schedules and to process incoming flight information changes in a real-time setting. As a part of the FIPS module, telex processing also allows for the interpretation of incoming telexes, updating the appropriate data in the AODB and making it accessible to the users. The apron management application is a rule-based system which enables planners and dispatchers to produce an up-to-the-minute plan for gate, stand, check-in counter and baggage belt assignment to individual aircraft. An easy-to-use rule generator is provided for the operators to develop new rules or edit existing ones to cater for changes in operational procedures and agreements with the airlines.
The Flight Information Display System (FIDS) module updates the information displayed on the public information boards and monitors. Besides the web-based counter application running on the CUTE workstations, a web-based staff information application provides information throughout the whole airport intranet. This application enables staff to call up flight and airport-related information relevant to their particular tasks.
Delhi currently handles 25.2 million passengers a year. Terminal 3 is a new integrated terminal that was inaugurated in July 2010 in time for Commonwealth Games. It has the capacity to handle 34 million passengers per year and is the eighth largest terminal building in the world. It has 168 check-in counters, 78 passenger boarding bridges, and 14 baggage belts. The airport saw 244,795 aircraft movements and handled 473,218 tonnes of cargo.
