Super Bowl XLIX is just around the corner and it will pair the stout defense of the Seattle Seahawks against the potent offensive of the New England Patriots in what should be a memorable game. The two teams are so evenly matched that there is a possibility that this could be the first time in Super Bowl history where there is no clear favorite come game time.
But we have a way to predict the Super Bowl Champions that Vegas does not – travel analytics. Some investors may use the Super Bowl as an indicator of the performance of the stock market in the year ahead, but we use flight booking data as an indicator of what team will be victorious. We’ve been able to accurately predict the winners of the last three Super Bowls based upon the number of bookings from a team’s city to the city where the game was being hosted.
How do we predict the champions?
In 2012 during the weekend of Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis the top origin and destination booked was NYC – IND, followed by EWR – IND, with BOS – IND coming in at third. The New York Giants went on to win that game against the New England Patriots.
During the weekend of Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans the top O&D was BWI – MSY, with SFO – MSY at third. The Baltimore Ravens went on to beat the San Francisco 49ers in that game.
Last year, during the weekend of Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the top O&Ds booked were SEA – EWR, JFK, LGA, which solidly outpaced the bookings from DEN. The Seattle Seahawks went on to crush the Denver Broncos in that match up.
So, what’s our prediction for Super Bowl XLIX in Phoenix? Based on the top booked O&D, SEA – PHX ranks above BOS – PHX, thus leading us to conclude that the Seattle Seahawks will become the next world champions.
