Recently we published a blog post in which we discussed how our position in the travel industry is inseparably linked to our responsibility to contribute to the environmental sustainability of our sector.
To live up to the challenge we’ve looked closely at our own operations in order to improve our environmental efficiency in a continuous manner. This is the main objective of the Amadeus Environmental Management System (EMS). The EMS audits our performance in five principal areas: energy consumption, paper consumption, CO2 emissions, water use and waste generated. The review is done at our top 11 sites by a number of employees across the world in places as far apart as Sydney, Nice, Bangkok, Miami, Erding, and Bangalore.
Today, we are glad to announce that our strategy and efforts have been externally recognised by two of the most renowned standards for evaluating sustainability and environmental performance: the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) and the CDP (formerly, the Carbon Disclosure Project).
2014 is the third year in a row that Amadeus has remained in the sustainability leadership index of the DJSI. This was no small feat because remaining in DJSI Europe was especially difficult this year as only 11 companies were added to the overall index while 35 were removed. Only those companies among the top 10% scorers enter the index. The DJSI evaluates sustainability performance from a holistic point of view, comprising three dimensions: economic, environmental and social. Competition to remain in the index increases year after year and, in order to make this Amadeus success sustainable in the long term, next year we will need to improve performance in several areas. For this reason we’ve encouraged all Amadeus employees to get involved in defining actions for improvement.
The CDP on the other hand evaluates a company’s leadership in combating climate change by analysing both the level of disclosure of greenhouse gas emissions data and performance in addressing emissions. Amadeus achieved a score of 93 in the Disclosure score (range 0 – 100) and an A in the Performance score (range A – E). Amadeus has been included in the Climate Performance Leadership Index in 2014 for the first time. Due to our excellent results this year, the CDP awarded Amadeus for our leadership role in the industry for combating climate change.
Our environmental strategy is completely aligned with CDP’s – we want to prioritise long-term prosperity over short-term gain.
We believe that the main reasons why we have received the award are the systematic approach in measuring emissions and improving performance since the implementation of the Amadeus EMS in 2009. This includes the outstanding energy efficiency of our Data Centre in Erding, which has also received certification from TÜV SÜD as an energy efficient data centre since 2010, and the environmental benefits that some of our solutions provide to customers. Additionally, our involvement with other industry stakeholders in common environmental projects, and the relative frugality of our operations, in which our environmental impact is limited as compared to other industry peers, are also important contributors to this recognition.
We now need to move one step further towards increased engagement and involvement at all levels of our organisation. This means intensifying the systematic evaluations at all our sites about what can be improved, and implement with no delay the actions that have both an economic and environmental benefit. We will also need to build a stronger company culture of environmental respect and our R&D teams need to systematically include environmental considerations into the solutions we develop. We are fully committed to continue this journey and we are already looking into new initiatives to implement in 2015 and beyond that will contribute to a sustainable travel future.
