One billion travellers have accessibility needs, with many being ignored until now. Amadeus has launched a research study, ‘Voyage of discovery. Working towards inclusive and accessible travel for all’, to identify what’s missing in order to achieve accessible travel for all.
Accessible travel is also a substantial business opportunity for the industry. In Europe and the US alone travellers with accessibility needs represent a market of US $70 billion. Also consider the fact that over 20 percent of the world population will be over 65 by 2050. As life expectancy grows, senior citizens have increased spending power and the desire to keep travelling.
Our research, carried out in collaboration with ILUNION, spans three continents and identified four building blocks so that accessible trips can become a reality:
- Communication at every stage of the journey
- Efficient and responsive customer service, essential for a seamless travel experience
- Greater integration and standardisation of content and services, which would make the process more streamlined
- A personalised offering, which would reach and include a wider audience of travellers
At a global level, initiatives in partnership with the public and the private sector are required. At a European level, accessible travel is becoming a priority. Eduardo Santander, Executive Director of the European Travel Commission (ETC), explains why in the video below.
Joint efforts are required to make accessible travel the norm and technology plays a key role. Travel technology providers are working together to develop cross channel experiences by connecting location based information, personal identification and context data to provide tailored services.
